More Fun with Flickr Tags: Exploring Street Art

Living in Brooklyn one of the highlights is the extensive street art in my neighborhood. It's an inspiration to me as a graphic designer and typography aficionado. Following-up on my recent post about flickr tags, I thought it worth mentioning that I discovered an great collection of photos of my favorite street artists on flickr. Read more to find likes to the likes of Faile, Swoon, and others.

Most of the spray painted graffiti I could take or leave—strike that, I could do without 95% of it (the tags and throw-ups). But I'll make an arbitrary distinction between street art and graffiti—one could say as arbitrary as the difference between hip-hop and rap. Most people say hip-hop is a lifestyle and rap is the music, but my favorite definition of the difference is, "Hip-hop are the records in your collection and rap is the stuff you don't play." In any case my point is: It comes down to opinion, and IMHO I'll define street art as a subset of graffiti that pushes the boundaries of the genre with different media. Stencils, paste-ups, tiles glued to the walls in pixel patterns, and other mediums are street art in my book.

Here are links to some of my favorite street artists on flickr:

Finally my buddy Mike has been documenting street art around Williamsburg and other parts of NYC
